About the Organization:

The Aluetian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) is an organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of Unagan/Unagas Alaskans. APIA’s mission is

  • To provide self-sufficiency an independence of the Unangan/Unangas by advocacy, training, technical assistance and economic enhancement;

  • To assist in meeting the health, safety and well-being needs of each Unangan/Unangas community;

  • To promote, strengthen and ensure the unity of the Unangan; and

  • To strengthen and preserve Unangax cultural heritage.

Your Role:

During the year of service, the VISTA member will

  • Conduct community outreach efforts in the Anchorage area to help identify community needs.

  • Coordinate local efforts to connect economically disadvantaged people to health services.

  • Work to improve the delivery of health care services and education to prevent disease.

In one word, life in Anchorage is exciting. There are always adventures to be had wherever you go. Anchorage is home to some of the best hiking, skiing, canoeing, fishing and biking in America. At the same time, Anchorage also has a thriving restaurant scene and all the amenities you would typically find in a big city. You will rarely ever be bored during your stay in Anchorage.
